David Young Proctor was born near Watertown, Tennessee on January 31, 1880. He attended local Watertown schools through high school, and then graduated from the Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1900.
David got his start in banking employed as assistant cashier of the Bank of Watertown from 1901 to 1906. In 1906, he moved to Nashville and he helped found the Broadway Bank & Trust Company of Nashville, where he served as teller when it opened on July 5, 1906. In 1910, Broadway Bank & Trust applied for a national charter, and on June 8, 1910, the Broadway National Bank of Nashville was granted charter 9774, and David was promoted to assistant cashier. On September 25, 1912, David married Louise Merrill McKee.
On January 13, 1914, David was elected cashier of Broadway National Bank, and on January 9, 1929, he was elected vice-president and cashier. On March 19, 1930, David became executive vice-president and on January 2, 1934, he was elected as president of Broadway National Bank. His first wife died in August, 1947, and in 1950 he married her half sister, Jane Ella Campbell. David retired around 1946, and was appointed as chairman of the executive committee for Broadway National, a position he held until his death. On October 5, 1963, David suffered a stroke and died at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. He is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in Nashville.
