Elmer Erwood Cheney (July 2, 1861 – May 10, 1934) was President of the Champaign National Bank from 1918-1933. He was also a Champaign county probate judge and secretary of the Curry Normal and Industrial Institute, a place of higher education for African-Americans.


Biography

Early life and family

Cheney graduated with a law degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1883. [1]

On February 28, 1889, Cheney married Cora May Burnham.[2]

Banking career

After the death of C. H. Marvin in January, 1918, Cheney was promoted (via election) from vice president to president of the Champaign National Bank.[3]

In 1901, Cheney was listed as a director for the Stevens Perfume Company. [4]

In 1906, Cheney was listed as the Secretary of the Curry Normal and Industrial Institute[1], a place of higher education for African-Americans. [5]It's possible that Cheney and Elmer W. B. Curry, President and Founder of the institute were schoolmates at Ohio Wesleyan.Template:Cn

In 1921, Cheney was listed as President of the Western Mutual Fire Insurance Company.[6]

Cheney was also a Champaign county probate judge and President of the Champaign Telephone Company.[7]

Later life and death

At age 63, Cheney died of a heart attack on May 10, 1934.[8][9]
