On Thursday, August 18, 1892, a disastrous conflagration occurred in the village of Delta which was almost completely destroyed with 73 buildings burned including the Masonic temple, the Central Hotel and the engine house. The fire was first discovered by Mr. J.M. Longnecker in the loft of Holt's livery situated in the southwestern part of the village and the alarm quickly given. The fire quick spread to the Central Hotel adjoining the livery on the north, spreading to the south side of Main Street to the brick building occupied by J.M. Longnecker which prevented the fire from going farther west. Before the fire was under control, it destroyed every business house with the exception of Briggs' hardware and Ramsey's bank. W.E. Ramsey, Delta Bank, loss was $300, fully insured.[1]

On Tuesday, January 13, 1903, the directors of the Farmers National Bank of Delta were elected at the annual meeting of the stockholders held at the bank building. The directors met, met on the 20th and re-elected all officers. Officers elected were Chas. P. Grisier, president; A.J. Fraker, vice president; J.W. Crissman, vice president; and W.C. Hoch, cashier. On January 1st, the bank declared a 2% semi annual dividend and laid away a handsome surplus.[2]

Early Sunday morning, February 3, 1907, the Farmers National Bank of Delta, Ohio, and B.T. Brown's shoe store were destroyed by fire. The fire started in the shoe store supposedly from a stove, and when it was discovered, it was beyond control; however, the hard work of the firemen kept the fire within the two walls. All of the insurance in the burned district was carried by the agency of Jas. Grisier & Son with the exception of a $1,000 policy, and was as follows: Farmers National Bank: Niagara of New York $2,500, Richland Mutual $1,600. The bank's loss was estimated at about $5,000 with $4,100 insurance. B.T. Brown: Insurance Michigan Commercial $2,000; Concordia $1,000; Continental $1,000; Colonial $1,500; North River $1,000; Ohio German $1,000. Mr. Brown's loss was about $8,000 with $7,500 insurance. Mrs. Atkinson's building occupied by G. W. Shaffer as a grocery store, was somewhat damaged, which was fully insured with Jas. Grisier & Son. The Farmers National Bank opened up for business promptly on time Monday morning in one corner of the building occupied by the Delta Hardware Co., and business went on at the bank just as if nothing had happened. The fire demonstrated that the Farmers National owned a good, substantial vault; within ten hours after the fire, Cashier W.C. Hoch turned the combination of the vault door and the lock worked perfectly and the massive one-inch chrome steel door swung open, and the contents of the vault were found in perfect condition. The Farmers National immediately began work towards the erection of one of the finest and best equipped bank buildings in Fulton County. This bank, while only six years old, enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest banks in Fulton County. Their statement made to the Comptroller of the Currency on January 26th showed total resources of $300,000.[3]

On Saturday, March 21, 1908, the formal opening of the new building of the Farmers National Bank took place.[4]

In December 1908, the bankers of Fulton County met at the Eager house and organized as an association known as the Fulton County Bankers' Association. The officers elected were: President, Charles P. Grisier, president, Farmers National Bank, Delta; Vice President, Charles M. McLaughlin, vice president, Farmers' and Merchants' Bank, Archbold; Secretary, S.O. Rothfuss, cashier, First National Bank of Wauseon. Those in attendance were I.W. Gotshall, second vice president of Farmers' & Merchants' Bank, Archbold; S.C. Schantz, cashier, Peoples State Bank, Archbold; F. Briggs, vice president, Peoples Savings Bank, Delta; A.B. Lathrop, president, M.J. Linehan, cashier of Bank of Swanton, Swanton; C.J. Brindley, Farmers' & Merchants', Swanton; J.W. Crisman and W.C. Hoch, Farmers National Bank, Delta. Representatives of the following banks could not attend, but had an application presented and became members of the association: Farmers' & Merchants' Bank, Metamora; Bank of Fayette, Fayette; Fayette State Savings Bank, Fayette; Home Savings Bank, Metamora; Farmers State Bank, Fayette. After two hours of work, the gong was sounded for the dining room which received the hearty approval of the bankers, reflecting great credit on the Eager House under the management of E.W. Blizzard.[5]

On Tuesday, June 16, 1914, the directors of the Farmers National Bank of Delta voted to change the bank from a national to a state bank. Officials stated that under the new currency act known as the Federal Reserve Act which recently became a law, all national banks whose deposits were payable on demand were prohibited from loaning these funds on farm mortgage security while state banks were permitted the loaning of 60% of their deposits on farm mortgages. They further stated that the law governing state banks in Ohio was just as conservative, giving the same protection to the depositors as those of national banks. State banks had to submit to rigid examinations twice each year and the restrictions governing their loans were the most conservative. The new bank would be known as the Farmer's State Bank of Delta and it would have the same people interested and the same management as the old bank. The capital and surplus would be the same at $43,000. The Farmers National was organized in 1890 and was one of the strongest banks of Fulton County.[6]
