Town History
Brooklyn is located in Poweshiek County in central Iowa.
Brooklyn was named by Dr. Rueben Sears in 1854 because it lies between 2 brooks, Big Bear Creek and Little Bear Creek. Brooklyn’s first Mayor was L.L. Littlefield in 1869.
During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Brooklyn was 1,234 in 1880, staying fairly steady with 1,233 in 1910, and raising slightly to 1,345 in 1930. It's highest population was 1,533 in 1920, and the current population is estimated at 1,413 (2016).
