Town History
Jonesboro is located in Washington County, in the northeastern corner of Tennessee. Nicknamed Tennesee's Oldest Town, it was founded in 1779, 17 years before Tennessee became a state and while the area was still under the jurisdiction of North Carolina. The town was named after North Carolina legislator Willie Jones, who had supported the state's westward expansion across the Appalachian Mountains. It was renamed Jonesboro for a period of time (as can be seen on the bank notes below), but has been changed back to the original spelling.
During the National Bank Note Era (1863-1935), the population of Jonesborough was 895 in 1880, growing slightly to 931 in 1930. It's highest and current population is estimated at 5,611 (2019).
