Lime Springs is located in Howard County in northeast Iowa.

The Old Town of Lime Springs was platted in 1857. After the railroad was built into the area, the town relocated nearby to its tracks. The town, then called Lime Springs Station, was platted again in 1867.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Lime Springs was 605 in 1900, dropping slightly to 539 in 1930. It's highest population was 605 in 1900, and the current population is estimated at 485 (2016).
