Town History

Harleysville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It is a suburb of Philadelphia with Center City Philadelphia less than 30 miles away. It is located mostly within Lower Salford Township and also in Franconia Township. Harleysville was settled by Pennsylvania Dutch in the 18th century and was named after Samuel Harley.

Pennsylvania Route 63 (Main Street) and Pennsylvania Route 113 (Harleysville Pike) meet in Harleysville and provide access to other routes on the main grid. Interstate 476 is a five-minute drive via PA 63 from Harleysville to the Lansdale Interchange, on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The population was 9,286 at the 2010 census.

On September 16, 1909, a certificate was issued authorizing The Harleysville National Bank with capital of $25,000 and Alvin C. Alderfer, president; M.C. Clemes, vice president; and O.A. Fulmer cashier.

On Tuesday, January 17, at the second annual election of the Harleysville National Bank, the old members of the Board were all re-elected as follows: Alvin C. Alderfer, Esq., M.C. Clemens, Isaac S. Butcher, Dr. V.Z. Keeler, Menno S. Clemens, of Harleysville: Jacob S. Gabel, Salfordville; Abram A. Groff, Lederachville; Arthur R. Bean, Skippack; Frank S. Long, Bergey; David K. Moyer, Elroy. Messrs. Benjamin F. Snyder, Kulpsville; Wilson C. Heany, Tylersport; D.M. Allebach, Worcester; Henry D. Bergey, Elroy; Charles M. Booz, of Vernfield, and William K. Bean, of Skippack, acted as judges of the election.

On August 12, 1942, at a meeting of the directors, Russell M. Hillegass, a resident of Souderton and vice president of the Harleysville National Bank, was elected president of the Souderton National Bank. He succeeded the late Clayton K. Gotwals.

In March 2004, a growing Pennsylvania bank was consolidating all of its financial institutions under a single brand name. Harleysville National Corp., with branches that included area locations in Monroe and Wayne counties, would place the Harleysville National Bank & Trust Co. name on 41 locations by March 29. Going away would be the names of its Pottstown-based Security National Bank and Lansford-based Citizens National Bank units. By May, when the company would complete its purchase of Malvern-based Millennium Bank, an additional five locations would be added to the Harleysville brand name. Stock in Harleysville National closed up 58 cents, to $27.52.
