Early life and family
Jacob Naylor was born in 1820 in Perry County on a farm owned by his father, also Jacob Naylor. Notably, Perry County, Pennsylvania was established the year he was born and was carved out of the northern portion of Cumberland County. The farm was on the western border of Newport in Oliver Township, and subsequently occupied by John S. Rober. He attended school in Newport, Pennsylvania. At the age of 18 years, he went to Philadelphia as an employee of Hunsworth, Eakins & Co., proprietors of the People's Iron Works at Front and Girard Avenue. He learned the trade of pattern making. Mr. Naylor purchased Mr. James Eakins' share of the business and afterwards that of Mr. John Hunsworth. He conducted the works until June 1898.
He was married to Rachel R. Samuel of Duncannon, Pennsylvania in 1847. She died in 1855. He remarried in 1860 to Annie M. Rich of Philadelphia. She died in 1891.
Banking career
Mr. Naylor organized the Eighth National Bank in 1864 and was its president ever since. He was a director of the Union Trust Company, the Manhattan Life Insurance Company, the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad, the Union League and a manager of the Franklin Institute. He was a member of the Columbia Club, and was a Mason and an Odd Fellow. He was elected Guardian of the Poor, serving 9 years until 1875 and was a Trustee of Northern Liberties Gas Works.
Later life and death
On July 10, 1898, Jacob Naylor died of Bright's disease at St. Agnes hospital, early Sunday morning. He had made his home at the Hotel Walton for a long time until his illness became so serious as to require constant attention of skilled nurses. He had been ill about three weeks. He was buried on July 12 in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia.
