Joseph Toy Howell was born May 26, 1853, in Richmond, Virginia, and moved with his father, Robert Boyte Crawford Howell, a Baptist minister, to Nashville, Tennessee in 1856. He was educated in the local public schools, and at home under the direction of both his father and his uncle, Morton Howell. His first employment was for the printing concern of Tavel, Eastman & Howell in Nashville. Joseph began working as a runner for the 4th National Bank of Nashville (charter 1669) in 1868 when he was 15 years old. He worked his way up in several clerical positions and was elected as Cashier of that bank in 1886, receiving that recommendation from Samuel J. Keith, President of the bank. In 1908 he moved to New York City as the President of the Carnegie Trust Company, but he returned to Nashville and was appointed President of the 4th National Bank on July 23, 1909.
In 1911 he left 4th National to be President of the Cumberland Valley National Bank of Nashville (charter 9659). He remained President of Cumberland Valley until it was absorbed by the American National Bank of Nashville (charter 3032) in 1921, where he was appointed Vice-President. He was Vice-President of American National when he died at home in Nashville on June 15, 1929, of heart disease and pneumonia. Joseph was heavily involved with Scottish Rite Masonry, attaining the 32nd degree in 1906 and the 33rd degree in 1909. He was also an early pioneer in Nashville aviation, being appointed as a colonel of aviation in the Tennessee National Guard. Joseph is buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Nashville.
