Town History

Winona is the county seat of Winona County, in southeastern Minnesota. The city of Winona began on the site of a Native American village named Keoxa. Non-Native Americans settled the area in 1851 and laid out the town into lots in 1852 and 1853. The city is named after legendary figure Winona, said to have been the first-born daughter of Chief Wapasha (Wabasha) III. During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Winona was 7,192 in 1870, increasing to 20,850 in 1930. It's highest population was 27,952 in 2010, and the current population is estimated at 26,813 (2018).

Winona was home to 7 national banks, all of them issuing notes.
